Research Scientist (Ocean Mapping)
(Three Year Contractual Position)

The Centre for Applied Ocean Technology undertakes research in ocean mapping and ocean monitoring. Emphasis is on the development, adaptation and application of technology to improve safety, efficiency, sustainability and profitability of ocean enterprise. The Centre is seeking a qualified individual with experience and expertise in ocean mapping to augment its current team of professionals.
Duties:
The successful applicant will be responsible for developing and implementing an applied research program and initiatives in ocean mapping. Scope of practice will include concept development, proposal preparation, project implementation (data acquisition, processing) and report writing. Technical proficiency in acoustic remote sensing (in particular, multi-beam sonars, sub-bottom profilers and side scan sonars) and sonar data processing is required. Demonstrated abilities in writing scientific proposals, securing funding and implementation of multi-year research programs are preferred. Also essential is a willingness to work in a team setting and with ocean industry and public sector agencies. The successful applicant will be supported by the current staff of marine electronics technologists and will work collaboratively with ocean mapping faculty at the Marine Institute and Memorial University to build a multi-year applied research program that is responsive to the needs of ocean industry. This position will involve working aboard Marine Institute near shore survey vessels, occasional short-term deployments offshore, and other related duties as required. The successful applicant will be stationed at the Marine Institute’s Holyrood Marine Base.
Qualifications:
The successful applicant will have a degree at the Ph.D. level in physics, geoscience, remote sensing, geomatics engineering, oceanography or related discipline. Demonstrated abilities in writing scientific proposals, securing research funding and implementing a multi-year research programs are required. The successful applicant will have a strong publication record for their career stage. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Experience in ocean mapping (surveys and research) would be considered a definite asset.
